Marquette Bank hosts Business After Hours event for Mt. Carmel Alumni and local business leaders featuring Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart
Orland Park, IL (June 30, 2012) – Marquette Bank, a locally-owned neighborhood bank, recently hosted Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart at a Business After Hours networking event at the Beverly area branch located at 99th and Western Ave. Sheriff Dart spoke before a group of 45 attendees made up of local business leaders and alumni from Mt. Carmel High School, which co-sponsored the event along with Marquette Wealth Management. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, graduate of Mt. Carmel High School’s Class of 1980 and Sheriff since 2006, was introduced by Ed Munin, Director of Marquette Wealth Management and also a Mt. Carmel alumnus. Mr. Munin highlighted Sheriff Dart’s past success as a former prosecutor and a state legislator. Sheriff Dart spoke about some of the new programs and innovations he has made at the Cook County Jail. The Cook County jail is the second largest in the nation with a population of approximately 11,000 inmates, a fact that Sheriff Dart is proud of, after his efforts to reduce the number of inmates and eliminate jail overcrowding. The Sheriff talked about the on-site farming operation at the jail which teaches farming skills to inmates while also generating product to defray the $125 per day expense of housing each inmate. The program is currently developing a tilapia farm and harvesting honey from on-site bee hives. Sheriff Dart also highlighted the chess-in-the-jail program where select inmates are taught how to play the game. The program gives inmates something to look forward to and has helped to reduce violence in the jail. As part of the program, Russian chess master Garry Kasparov made a guest appearance, sharing his insights and knowledge with inmates. “We were so pleased to have Sheriff Tom Dart as our guest speaker and see the kind of innovate change he has brought to the operations at the Cook County Sheriff’s Office,” said Ed Munin, Director of Marquette Wealth Management. “Local events such as these spark ideas, partnerships and innovation in our community and these networking events are critical to the success of business owners.” The Business After Hours networking event also featured Tom Grogan, Marquette Bank Beverly Branch Manager, and Martin Chavez, Marquette Wealth Management Financial Advisor for the Beverly Branch. Marquette Bank has worked with Mt. Carmel High School in the past to sponsor events for local business leaders and school alumni.
