• Marquette Bank Supports Teach Children to Save Day
Neighborhood Bank offers three ways to encourage and help children to start saving

Orland Park, IL (April 17, 2013) – Teach Children to Save Day is taking place this year on April 23rd and during this time Marquette Bank, a locally-owned neighborhood bank, is encouraging local families to communicate the value of saving money to the young people in their lives. In observance of Teach Children to Save Day, the bank is suggesting tips for raising money-smart kids partnering with Governors State University to help educate children on the importance of saving and is offering a special savings match of $25 on any new Marquette Bank children’s savings accounts for a limited time.

“If we want our children’s generation to be savvy money managers, we have to start teaching them the importance of saving now,” Betty Kosky-Harn, Executive Vice President of Retail Banking, said. “Good financial habits can be learned at a young age and we encourage parents to educate their children.”

Marquette Bank representatives will be educating the students of Scarlet Oak School in Oak Forest on April 23rd as part of Governors State University’s initiative to help teach cildren on how to save. In addition, Marquette Bank offers the following tips for raising money-smart kids:

    • Set the example of a responsible money manager by paying bills on time, being a conscientious spender and an active saver. Children tend to emulate their parents' personal financial habits.

    • Talk openly about money with your kids and communicate your values and experiences with money. Encourage them to ask questions and be prepared to answer them – even the tough ones.

    • Explain the difference between needs and wants, the value of saving and budgeting and the consequences of not doing so.

    • Open a savings account for your children and take them with you to make deposits. This will teach them how to be hands-on with their money management.

    • Let friends and family know about your child’s savings goal. They’ll be more likely to give cash for special occasions which means more trips to the bank.

    • Engage your community as you’ll find that many schools, banks and community organizations share your commitment to creating a money-savvy generation. Start a coalition of support to provide youth with the education they need to succeed.
